Old Barns yield old barnwood

This old barn on the corner of 3rd South and the road coming into Sugar from Rexburg is where we got some old barnwood to put the saw on that I got from Lyle that had belonged to my Dad, Edwin Schiess. We are going to put it up on the top porch at the cabin.
This is the saw that we are going to take to the cabin. Your Dad cleaned it up and I stained the board. Becky took it off the barn wall with a hammer so it was a joint effort. I think it will look good up there.

What could a rock, gifts,a block, keys and Liahona have to do with features in our Church. (I am missing the ghost) These represent parts of my next Relief Society Lesson. You have probably allready had it. Becky always comes up with great ideas. Maybe she should be teaching this lesson.

"My wall Decor"

This is my favorite scripture and when I have to go through something difficult I repeat it over and over in my mind. The hardest part is to not lean towards what we understand only. Our Father in Heaven knows everthing and can see the ending as well as the beginning. He knows what is best for us even tho we do not. We much trust in Him and let Him guide us instead of relying just on what we think we want.
Dad sure spent a lot of pictures teaching Drivers Ed and I glad we have these pictures of him. He spent a lot of years working for all of us. I love him very much and I'm glad we can all be a support to him at this difficult time. Thank you for all of your prayers.

Saturday at home

While the men worked today, Becky took the kids for rides on the scooter. They were really good about standing in line for the next ride. Kedryn and Dorrin were hiding somewhere. I think the boys must be shyer as Cade is hiding also. Now Landon was very happy that it was his turn.
The men worked hard in the garden for Dad. Lance rototilled and the others dug out weeds and Rod and Derek dug up the 4 pine trees to send home with Shanell and Rod.
Thank you all for coming to our home to meet about what to do with Dad and the problem with the melanoma. Thanks for being on Skype also Kendra. We really appreciate your love and support and thank you men for giving Dad a blessing and for giving me one also. Wendy and Scott were here also. It is such a blessing to have our sons and son in laws worthy to hold the Priesthood of God and to use it properly. We love you all very much.

Wedding 44 years ago

This is our wedding certificate we received after we were married in the Idaho Falls Temple on August 26, 1966. My Dad and Uncle Alfred were our witnesses. Brother Wray was the Temple president and Betty Kunz's (Keith's wife) Father. Guess we started it all for our family. It seems like a long time ago.
Notice Mom and Dad and Mother Bates in the wedding reception line at the Cedron churchhouse. Also in the line was Pete as best man and bridesmaids, Bonnie, Rilla and Mary Lou. Lena was the oldest neice and was the flower girl. It was a very simple reception. Rilla and I made crepe paper pink roses and I held a real long stemmed rose. My color was dark aqua and pink. Bonnie made our wedding cake that we were cutting. Merle Kunz was looking one on the right side. We went on a honeymoon to Yellowstone Park. A story for another day.

Hot one today

what can I say. It was very hot today and I had the fan on all day. This morning I took your Dad to the dermotalogist about a mole on his back that I was concerned about. He was concerned enough to take it out right then in his office. He also took a scrape from another one. I have tryed to keep ice on it every 20 minutes out of each hour and give him extra tylenol every 4 hours. They will send them away to be tested. A stressful day again. One more of those tests we have to have in this life I guess. Aunt Bonnie had a cancer taken from her nose yesterday by this Dr. Becky went to the cabin yesterday evening. We were going up this morning after the Dr. appt. but it didn't work out. Hopefully Dad will feel okay tomorrow and we can go up.

The display at Idaho Falls visitors center--NASA Hubble Telescope pictures

Moses 1:33 And worlds without number have I created; and I also created them for mine own purpose; and by the Son I created them, which is mine Only Begotten.
If you haven't been there already try to go as it is well worthwhile. It is amazing the wonderful creations that we have. Even tho there are so many other creation, Our Heavenly Father knows and loves each one of us. We are so blessed to understand this.

NASA Hubble Telescope pictures

These pictures are at the Idaho Falls visitors center until Sept. 6, Labor Day. Wonderful.

Nasa Hubble Telescope pictures

After Dad's Dr. appt. we went over to Wendy's and saw the kids and Wendy and Katrina came over to get the 3 kids who spent the night at Wendy's. They had a good time. Then we went over to the Idaho Falls Visitors Center to see the Heavenly Majesty - Images of Creation display. It was beautiful. I'll show you some of the pictures.
This display will be there until Labor Day, September 6. If you haven't seen it is worth seeing.

Old, old saw of Grandpa Schiess

At the Schiess Reunion this year Uncle Lyle gave all his siblings some old tools of my Dad. I picked this saw and another tool that I will have show to you and let you figure out wwhat it was used for. Dad was going to bye a board to place it onto, and I said I wish we had some old barn wood and Becky said maybe we could get some from that old barn by the rental property down where the road turns from Rexburg, so we went and asked Kathy if we could get some and she said take all you want, so we went and got a piece. Dad took the board and brushed it off real well and cut it down a little and then i varnished it. Becky will probably send you some pictures of that. Dad had a new handle made from hardwood for it as the old one was all broken in pieces. I'll send a picture when it is completed.`

Milkshake anyone? You have a choice, Chocolate Raspberry, Strawberry or Raspberry. I know the raspberry tasted great. Becky makes some great shakes.
Hum, I wonder what a Lemon or Lime shake would be like. I actually like lemon juice on vanilla ice cream. It is hard to ruin ice cream.

Mormon Moose?

Dad and I went to the Temple on Wednesday morning. Becky went to the Temple on Friday morning. But guess who went to the Temple on Thursday morning? Mormon Moose!! I could think of lots of funny things to say, but since it was 2 bull moose, I didn't. Sorry we both missed them.

What I saw in my rearview mirror on way home August 20th.

It took me 45 minutes to come through the shortcut as I had to keep stopping and taking pictures of the Tetons. How beautiful they are. Someday I will get the pictures in the right order I think.
This is Matt dumping the gravel behind the retaining wall. He was going back for another load.
This is how far they got with the gravel on Thursday night. It is right in front of the cabin. We should be able to get into the cabin a lot earlier next year I think. Maybe it pays to speak up sometimes. The engineer did spend a lot of time finding out things on the deeds etc. and talked to Boise about the problem. I'm glad I had all those witnesses. This is the last They should do for 5 more years. What a hassel. Sometimes you think you have rights and find out the people above you can do just what they want to. I was hoping they would finish the job before I had to come home but there was ssome things I had to do here. Becky and I are going back up tomorrow to get Dad and help if we can.

The stone wall is almost done-Wednesday August 18

As you can see the wall is almost done. It looks rather bare as all the vegetaion in front is gone. We waited and waited all day for the county engineer to come and talk to me. I was upset at the mess they had made along our road. They brushed the side of the road and killed all of the small pine trees that Wendy and Lance planted so many years ago. Then some of the bog trees were camaged. Uncle Wayne, Lynn, Lyle, and Tim were there for the meedting. He finally said he would be there at 6:45 and he was a half hour late. He said the County had made our road a prescriptive road and they were able to do what they wished to improve it. The forest service gave them $60,000 to improve the county roads to the forest entry ways so they were working on Henderson, Grove and Patterson where we live. It doesn't do much to argue with them but he promised that there would be no more damage to our trees and along the road in front of our home. The easment isn't really on our property. They were supposed to build a road directly up from the boys road but it can't be done because of the hills, creek, etc, in the way. I told them to go ahead with the gravel which was not supposed to be here until Monday.
Then at 3:00 on Thursday guess who should appear but the grater and 5 big trucks. We had planned on coming home but this changes our plans. Then we couldn't get out for awhile if we had wanted to. They are supposed to put 16 1/2 loads of gravel on the whole road up to the forest line. They put 10 loads on the road from when you come in to our cabin. When I left at 2:15 on Friday they hadn't come back to finish but Matt came just as we were ready to come home so that changed our plans again. After Matt unloaded a load of gravel behind the retaining wall he went back for another load and I came home and left Dad up there.
I stood out by the road to make sure they were careful. See this big truck unloading right before our cabin. On the next blog I will show you how it looks when I left today. (Friday 20)

The way to babysit

Becky was watching Shanells kids tonight while they went to a steak fry for his work. Becky ended up tending them all the time as they wanted to be with her of course. She just got home from Utah about 3 or 4 o'clock and helped me pick the rest of the raspberries and make supper. She is a big help to me. When the kids came she took them outside to play for awhile and then took them downstairs and showed them a movie of Layne and one I took last night at the sand dunes. Then she played a game on the TV with them called Lego Starwars. So you can see what they are looking at below.
Glad they know who is who because I sure don't. They enjoyed it anyway.

August Family Home Evening

They look a little like ants up on that sand dune at by Idaho Falls. Wendy was in charge of our Family Home evening for the month of August. The kids had a ball playing in the sand and having fun together. Just as we got ready to eat we had a bad sand storm which drove us all into our cars. Then it cleared up and the kids had a ball.
Mariah had written out a play and Grandpa played the part of Lehi although they didn't tell anyone that at the time. He just told all the kids that he had seen a vision and that we were to leave all of our physical things behind and take our tents and go into the desert. Lance (Laman) complained and Derek (Lemuel) said we want to go back. Rod (Nephi) said he would go and do the things that the Lord comanded him to. Then Lehi sent them back to get the scriptures and of course the two brothers didn't want to. Grandma was afraid she wouldn't see her sons again but they came back safe and sound.
The kids got to get in the tents and they Wendy said that Katrina should get in the tent and who would deliver her baby when it came, maybe Kaitlyn and they all laughed. It was very effective and the kids were saying things like I need my teddy bear and stuffed animals. Thanks for the nice home evening and thanks Scott for grilling all those hamburgers and hot dogs.
We missed Shanell, Becky and Kendra and Jared and their family. We do have a great family and we love you all.

Different lunches--I can do it!!

Saturday for lunch I had huckleberries and raspberries. Friday I got about a cup full of huckleberries so I had some of them with cream and sugar the the rest I used in pancakes for supper. Yummy. I was alone for lunch. Now see the difference for lunch today when Dad was here. Personally I preferred the top one. It was colder today so thus the oven lunch.
Becky you would be so proud of me. I got my telephone to ring finally on Friday night but I don't know what I did. As long as it works now. Then last night I finally got the pill timer to ring at 7 lst night so I fiddled with it and finally got the 1:00 timmer to ring, and I think it will work tonight also. I tried to get small pictures for the top two, one on one side and the other on the other side but somehow it is the same old large center one.
Have a good day.

Just looking at this list makes me tired. Guess I will get a good book and read. Ha Ha!!

August 13 at cabin - Birthdays, Wendy, Luke and Layne

Hey you grandkids, look what I found across the road from the cabin. I need a few little pickers I guess. I rode the 4 wheeler up to Low pass to look for huckleberries, but no luck.
Dad and Matt worked outside on the retaining wall until 9:30 last night. It looks good I think. We waited up there until 1:15 today but he hadn't come yet so we cames home and I guess he came right after we left.
The county has made a mess along the road cutting down trees, etc. Look at this one which was just up the road from the cabin. It was over a 100 years old. Real sad. I put a sign on our bid tree out front and asked them not to cut them down but I don't know if it will help or not. They cut down all the little trees that Wendy and Lance planted years ago. I called them about it but don't know if it will help or not. Progress right!!

Trip to cabin on Thursday Aug. 12th

This was on the shortcut, poleline road, to go to the cabin.
Matt was working at the cabin on the retaining wall when we got there. Dad helped him by bringing the stones to him. He is using an instrument to see that it is level.
Matt had to dig out the plants and dirt in the front of the cabin before he could start the retaining wall.

Canning day

Today I put up 14 quarts of raspberries. They will sure taste good this winter. Aren't they pretty?

Cloudy skies & good berries

This morning it was cloudy and cool, 49 degrees, and then this evening when Becky and I picked the raspberries it was hot. It sprinkled a little while we were picking. It takes about 2 hours to pick them and we got over 3 1/2 gallon tonight. The berries have been really nice this year. I won't show a picture of them Jared so you won't have to envy us. Becky will bring you down some on Thursday.
Just think Becky if I didn't have you to help me it would have taken me 4 hours, but I think I would have given up before then. Thanks for all your help.
